An estimated 85% of women approaching the menopause experience the discomfort of hot flushes, so in an effort to reduce their heavy reliance on hormonal therapies and pharamceutical treatments, a top University in Texas has looked at alternative therapies for the answer.

Their study has revealed that women who were able to visualise images of coolness during hypnotherapy saw a dramatic decrease in hot flashes. This raises the possibility that positive results could be found even when using self-help hypnosis.

Studies by Baylor University found that hot flashes were reduced by up to to 68% by those receiving hypnotherapy. Dr. Gary Elkins, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor College said; "The finding may indicate that areas of the brain activated by imagery may be identical to those activated by actual perceived events. Consequently, it may be that while a woman suffering hot flashes imagines a cool place, she also feels cool rather than the heat of a hot flash."
